Mission and Outreach

Chapel Hill has participated in organized West Virginia Conference Volunteers in Mission trips in the past, though we have recently developed a rotating schedule of mission trips that we are offering to people in the congregation and the community. While some individuals may still participate in VIM trips, we are committed to mission at Chapel Hill and to offering a yearly mission trip.

We recognize the importance of mission in the life of a Christian, the life-changing opportunities they uniquely present, and the many people in our community, state, nation, and world who are in need of someone showing them the love of Christ through service.

Key aspects of mission trips at Chapel Hill include service to those in need, breaking down of our own personal biases, challenging ourselves in a self-driven society, love in action, and justice partnering with mercy.

We commit ourselves to serving people in our community throughout the year, while expanding our worldview with one large trip each year. Our mission model is on a three year rotation. Year 1 is a trip to somewhere in West Virginia, other than Upshur County. Year 2 is a trip to another state within the United States. Year 3 is an international mission trip. Sometimes we are led to places hit by natural disaster, which can alter the rotation.

In 2010, a group of 21 youth and adults traveled to Winter Park, Florida to serve disadvantaged people in the Central Florida region. We painted houses in economically impoverished neighborhoods. In addition, we interacted with the families who we were serving.

In 2011, 19 youth and adults traveled to Nassau, Bahamas to help rebuild houses in a camp for people with HIV/AIDS. We built concrete handicap ramps, put up dry wall and other interior house work, and painted. We also interacted with the residents. It was a life-changing experience!

In 2012, a group of 18 youth and adults traveled to Oak Hill, WV to serve disadvantaged people in southern West Virginia. We painted houses, built a porch and repaired siding while building relationships with the failies we were serving.

In 2013, a group of 27 youth and adults traveled to the Hiefer Farm in Rutland, Massachusetts where they participated in conversations around global sustainability and helped to run the farm.

In 2014, a group of 8 youth and adults traveled to Northern Ireland to work with the East Belfast Mission, while 15 youth and adults traveled to the Dominican Republic where they worked with children and led Vacation Bible School, while also doing some reconstruction.

In 2015, we took a break because our Mission Leader was on maternity leave.

In 2016, 22 youth and adults headed to the Spirit Lake Nation in North Dakota where we replaced roofs on some houses on the Native American reservation.

In 2017, we stayed close to home and participated in flood relief work in Clay County in southern West Virginia.

In 2018, we traveled to Houston where we worked on reconstruction of houses destroyed by Hurricane Harvey.

While we planned to go on an International trip in 2019, God led us to work in the Florida Panhandle where over 20 youth and adults traveled to do reconstruction of homes in the Panama City area.

We always welcome people to join us on our mission work trips!

Community Block Party

In 2010, Chapel Hill held the First Annual Community Block Party. Each year since, we have welcomed around 400 people in the community to join us for free food and fun! We have carnival games with prizes, cotton candy, sno cones, hot dogs, nachos, popcorn, a bounce house, karaoke, face painting, a cake walk, and much more! We have a coin toss, which is the only activity that requires money. The money goes to Crosslines for community assistance. The event happens on one of the last Saturdays in August. All are welcome to attend this free event!
